TL;DR
Boot into Safe Mode (hold Power > long-press Power Off > Safe Mode) to check if a third-party app is causing the flicker. If it stops in Safe Mode, uninstall recently added apps. If it continues in Safe Mode, try disabling Adaptive Brightness and checking for software updates.
What Causes Screen Flickering on Samsung Phones
Screen flickering on Samsung Galaxy phones has a few common causes: a third-party app conflicting with the display driver, Adaptive Brightness behaving erratically, a software bug (often post-update), a loose display connection from a drop, or in rarer cases, a defective OLED panel. The Safe Mode test is the fastest way to narrow it down.
Fix 1: Boot Into Safe Mode
Hold the Power button > long-press 'Power Off' on screen > tap 'Safe Mode'. In Safe Mode, all third-party apps are disabled. If flickering stops, a third-party app is the cause. Restart normally and uninstall recently installed or updated apps one by one until the flickering stops.
Fix 2: Disable Adaptive Brightness
Settings > Display > Adaptive Brightness > toggle off. Set brightness manually. Adaptive Brightness uses the ambient light sensor to continuously adjust brightness, and a bug in the algorithm or a dirty sensor can cause the display to pulse or flicker.
Fix 3: Check Screen Mode Settings
Settings > Display > Screen Mode. If you're on 'Vivid' mode, try switching to 'Natural'. Some third-party apps interact poorly with Vivid's color processing, which can manifest as flickering in specific apps.
Fix 4: Disable Hardware Overlays (Developer Option)
Enable Developer Mode: Settings > About Phone > tap 'Build Number' 7 times. Then Settings > Developer Options > scroll to 'Disable HW Overlays' and toggle on. This forces everything to render through the GPU. It can reveal whether the issue is with hardware overlay processing.
Fix 5: Update One UI and Apps
Settings > Software Update > Download and Install. Also update all apps via the Galaxy Store and Google Play Store. Screen flickering bugs have appeared in several One UI releases and been patched.
Fix 6: Check the Display for Physical Damage
If your phone was dropped and the screen started flickering afterward, the display cable may have been loosened. Look for other signs: a faint horizontal line across the screen, discoloration in one corner, or the flicker getting worse when you flex the phone body. These indicate physical damage requiring professional repair.
Samsung has issued service bulletins for display issues on certain Galaxy models. Check our [Samsung recalls guide](/guides/samsung-recall) to see if your model is covered.
