Samsung Galaxy Overheating: 7 Ways to Cool It Down

Close background apps, remove the case while charging, and check if a rogue app is using the CPU in the background via Settings > Battery > Battery Usage. If it's a new issue after an update, a cache partition wipe often fixes it.

Samsung Galaxy phones — particularly the S and A series — are known to run warm during demanding tasks. Some heat is completely normal: processors generate heat when working hard. But if your phone is uncomfortably hot during basic tasks like texting or idle, or if it throttles performance and shows a temperature warning, that's a problem worth fixing.

Go to Settings > Battery and Device Care > Battery > Battery Usage. Look for any app consuming an unusually high percentage of battery in the background. Social media apps (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook) are frequent offenders. Force-stop the culprit: hold the app icon > App Info > Force Stop.

Thick phone cases trap heat — especially during wireless or fast charging, which already generates significant heat. Remove the case when charging. This is especially important with Samsung's 25W and 45W fast charging, which pushes a lot of power into the battery quickly.

Third-party chargers can cause your phone to run hotter than it should. Samsung's fast charging is negotiated through a specific protocol (Samsung Adaptive Fast Charge). Non-certified chargers may charge inefficiently, generating excess heat. Stick to Samsung's included charger or a certified alternative. Bluetooth, GPS, hotspot, and high screen brightness all contribute to heat. Turn off features you're not using. Reduce screen brightness and switch to a shorter screen timeout (Settings > Display). Disabling Always-On Display while charging can also help.

After a major One UI update, cached data can cause the phone to work harder than necessary, generating extra heat. To wipe the cache partition: power off > hold Volume Up + Power > tap 'Wipe Cache Partition' in recovery mode > restart. This doesn't delete any personal data.

Settings > Software Update > Download and Install. Samsung regularly releases firmware patches that fix known overheating bugs. If your phone started running hot after a specific update, a subsequent patch often addresses it.

If the phone is persistently hot even at idle and nothing else has worked, a factory reset can rule out software corruption. Back up your data first via Samsung Cloud or Smart Switch.
