TL;DR

First, check Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual and make sure the audio balance slider is centered. Then clean the mesh on the silent AirPod with a dry cotton swab. If still broken, put both AirPods in the case, press the setup button on the back until the light flashes white, and re-pair them.

Why One AirPod Goes Silent

One-sided audio is one of the most reported AirPod issues, and it almost always has one of three causes: wax or debris blocking the speaker mesh, audio balance accidentally shifted in settings, or a pairing/firmware glitch. True hardware failures (failed driver) do happen but are less common.

Fix 1: Check Audio Balance

Go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual. Look at the audio balance slider — it should be perfectly centered. If it's been nudged to one side (this happens more than you'd think), that's your fix. Drag it back to the middle.

Fix 2: Clean the Speaker Mesh

Earwax is the #1 cause of one quiet AirPod. The speaker mesh is the small circular grille on the AirPod that goes in your ear. Use a dry cotton swab to gently clean it — never use water, rubbing alcohol directly on the mesh, or anything sharp. Apple recommends a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Some people find that gently pressing on the mesh while dry-cleaning it dislodges built-up wax. Don't stick anything into the mesh holes.

Fix 3: Check Charging and Battery Level

Put both AirPods in the case for 30 seconds, then take them out. Check battery levels: on iPhone, open the case near your phone to see the battery widget, or ask Siri 'What's my AirPods battery?'. If one AirPod is at 0%, it may just need more charging time — sometimes one charges slower if the charging contact is dirty. Clean the charging contacts in the case with a dry cotton swab.

Fix 4: Reset Your AirPods

This is the most reliable fix for pairing and firmware issues. Put both AirPods in the case and close the lid. Wait 30 seconds. Open the lid. On the back of the case, press and hold the setup button until the status light flashes amber, then white. Now go to Settings > Bluetooth, forget your AirPods, and re-pair them by holding the case near your iPhone with the lid open.

Fix 5: Check for Firmware Update

AirPods firmware updates happen automatically when the AirPods are in the case, connected to power, and near a paired iPhone on WiFi. To check your current firmware: Settings > Bluetooth > tap (i) next to your AirPods > scroll down to 'Firmware Version'. If you think you're on outdated firmware, leave the AirPods in the case plugged into power overnight and check again tomorrow.

If one AirPod physically sounds distorted (crackling, buzzing) rather than just quiet, that may indicate driver damage from moisture exposure.
