What Apple, Samsung, and Google Actually Offer
Apple: Usually offers free repair at Apple Store or authorized service provider. Some programs offer replacement devices (like the 2019 MacBook Pro battery program). Rarely offers refunds unless multiple repairs fail. Samsung: Typically ships a replacement device or offers mail-in repair. The Galaxy Note 7 recall offered full refunds—but that was exceptional. Google: Often just sends a replacement Pixel without asking for the old one back first. Their support is surprisingly good for hardware issues.
How Long the Process Actually Takes
Apple repair programs: Walk-in at Apple Store = same day to 3 days. Mail-in = 1-2 weeks. If they need to order parts, add another week. Samsung: Mail-in repair takes 5-10 business days. Replacement device ships in 1-5 business days. Google: Replacement Pixels typically arrive in 3-7 business days. They'll email a shipping label for the defective unit. Other brands (Dell, Microsoft, etc.): Usually 2-3 weeks for the full cycle. Not sure if YOUR device is affected? Check your serial number in 30 seconds →
The Program Expired—Now What?
Don't give up immediately. Call customer support and explain your situation. If the defect is clearly a manufacturing issue, they sometimes make exceptions—especially for devices just outside the window. The magic words: "I understand the program has ended, but this is clearly a manufacturing defect. Can you make an exception or escalate this?" Success rate is maybe 20-30%, but worth trying on expensive repairs.
The Escalation Path When a Store Says No
Level 1: Ask for a store manager or senior advisor. Level 2: Call corporate customer relations (Apple: 1-800-275-2273, Samsung: 1-800-726-7864). Level 3: Executive email contacts—these actually work. Apple: tcook@apple.com routes to executive relations team. Samsung: Try reaching out via their official Twitter/X support. Google: support.google.com/pixelphone has a "request callback" option. Document everything with dates, names, and case numbers at each step. New programs from Apple, Samsung, and Google launch without warning. Set up alerts for your devices →
