TL;DR: Try These in Order

Check if Camera access is toggled off in Quick Settings (swipe down, look for Camera icon). Clear the Camera app cache: Settings → Apps → Camera → Storage → Clear cache. Force restart your Pixel: Volume Up + Power for 10+ seconds. Try toggling "Frequent Faces" in camera settings off and back on. If none work, a factory reset might be needed—back up first.

Step 1: Check the Camera Access Toggle

Android 12+ added a quick toggle to disable camera access system-wide. Swipe down from the top twice to open Quick Settings. Look for a camera icon with a line through it—that means camera access is blocked. Tap it to re-enable. This blocks ALL apps from using the camera, and it's easy to tap accidentally. If you updated to Android 12 or later and suddenly got black screen, this is probably it. If your Pixel is frozen, here's how to force restart it →

Step 2: Clear the Camera App Cache

Go to Settings → Apps → See all apps → Camera → Storage & cache. Tap "Clear cache" first. If that doesn't work, tap "Clear storage" (this resets camera settings but doesn't delete photos). After clearing, open the camera app. You might see it reconfigure itself briefly. This fixes most software-related black screen issues, especially ones that started after an update.

Step 3: Force Restart Your Pixel

For Pixel 6 and newer: Press and hold Power + Volume Up for about 10-15 seconds until the phone vibrates and restarts. For older Pixels: Just hold the Power button for 30 seconds. A force restart clears temporary software glitches that can cause the camera to hang. If your camera was working fine yesterday and suddenly shows black screen today, a restart often fixes it.

Step 4: Toggle Frequent Faces Setting

This is a weird fix that works for many Pixel users. Open the Camera app (even if it shows black). Tap the gear icon for Settings. Find "Frequent Faces" (or "Top Shot") and toggle it OFF, then back ON. Some users also report success with: turning on the flashlight immediately after restarting the phone, then opening the camera. It seems to "wake up" the camera hardware.

When It's a Hardware Problem

If the black screen only affects the rear camera (front camera works), or vice versa, it might be hardware. Same if the issue persists after a factory reset. Common hardware causes: loose ribbon cable (sometimes fixable by gently pressing around the camera area), damage from drops, or a defective camera module. Check if your Pixel model has any active repair programs from Google → Google support is generally good about replacements for known defects.
