Why Your Nintendo Switch Is Overheating

The Nintendo Switch can generate significant heat during graphically demanding games, when using a third-party charging dock, when playing while docked with blocked vents, or when the cooling fan is dirty or failing. Joy-Con drift can also cause the console to work harder than normal, increasing heat.

Step 1: Immediate Cooling

Power off the console and remove it from the dock. Lay it on a cool, hard surface. Wait at least 30 minutes before turning it back on. Do not use a cooling fan or put it in the fridge — rapid cooling can cause condensation damage.

Step 2: Check for Common Causes

Check that vents are not blocked. Avoid third-party docks and chargers — use only the official Nintendo AC adapter. Take breaks during extended gaming sessions. Make sure the console is not sitting on a soft surface like a bed or couch.

Step 3: Update System Software

Go to System Settings > System > System Update to install any pending updates. Outdated system software can cause performance issues and unnecessary heat.

Step 4: Clean the Cooling Fan

Use compressed air to blow out the vent openings on the back and sides of the console. If overheating persists after cleaning, the fan may be failing and the console needs repair.

Step 5: Check if Joy-Con Drift Is Making It Worse

A drifting analog stick forces the console to register constant input, causing unnecessary CPU load and heat. Nintendo offers free Joy-Con repair for drift regardless of warranty status. Request repair at en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/ask/ht/789.

When It Is a Hardware Problem

If the console overheats during normal use after trying all steps above, possible causes include faulty thermal paste, a failing fan, or a motherboard issue. Stop using the console and contact Nintendo support.
