TL;DR: Dell Battery Recalls Are Common

Dell has issued multiple lithium-ion battery recalls for fire/burn hazards. These affect specific battery models across various laptop lines (Inspiron, Latitude, XPS, Precision). Major Dell Battery Recalls

Dell's biggest battery recall was in 2006—4.1 million batteries affected due to fire risk. More recent recalls have been smaller but ongoing. Affected battery types include: 4-cell and 6-cell lithium-ion packs for Inspiron, Latitude, XPS, and Precision laptops. Signs your battery might be recalled: swelling (laptop doesn't sit flat anymore), excessive heat, or reduced capacity. Even if your battery seems fine, check—the defect can appear suddenly.

How to Check Your Dell

Find your Service Tag: (1) Look for a sticker on the bottom/back of your laptop—it's a 7-character alphanumeric code. (2) Or in Windows, run "wmic bios get serialnumber" in Command Prompt. (3) On the Dell Support site, enter this tag at dell.com/support. It will show your specific model, warranty status, and any applicable recalls. For battery-specific checks, the recall notice will list battery model numbers—remove your battery and check the label. Not sure if YOUR device is affected? Check your serial number in 30 seconds →

Dell Power Adapter Recalls

Dell has also recalled power adapters (chargers) with shock/fire hazards. Typically affects specific adapter model numbers, not all adapters for a laptop line. Check the adapter itself for model number (usually on the brick part). Common recalled types: 65W and 90W adapters from certain manufacturing dates. Dell ships free replacements—usually arrives within 2-3 weeks.
