What the Crackling and Static Actually Is
AirPods Pro crackling is not a dirty tip problem. The two most common complaints — a crackling or static sound that gets worse in loud environments or during exercise, and Active Noise Cancellation not working properly (loss of bass, increased background noise leaking in) — are hardware issues tied to how the ANC microphone system interacts with the speaker driver. On the original AirPods Pro (1st generation, released 2019), Apple confirmed this was a manufacturing defect affecting a small percentage of units made before October 2020. On the AirPods Pro 3 (released late 2025), the same static and hissing complaints have surfaced since launch, particularly when ANC is on with no media playing, and Apple has not issued an official fix as of April 2026.
Figure Out Which Model You Have First
Open the case and look at the earbuds. The original AirPods Pro (1st gen, model A2083/A2084) has a long stem with a force sensor. The AirPods Pro 2nd gen (model A2698/A2699) has a shorter stem with a touch sensor and comes with a case that has a speaker on the bottom. The AirPods Pro 3 is the latest generation released in 2025. Your exact model determines what options you have — the ended service program applied only to 1st gen units manufactured before October 2020.
The Apple Service Program for 1st Gen AirPods Pro: What Happened
Apple ran a free service program for AirPods Pro 1st generation specifically covering the crackling, static, and ANC issues. The program covered affected units manufactured before October 2020 for three years from the original retail sale date. Apple ended this program in October 2025. If your AirPods Pro 1st gen were purchased before October 2020 and are now more than 5 years old, the free replacement window has closed. If you bought yours after October 2020, the manufacturing defect coverage never applied to your unit — Apple determined those were produced with a corrected process. You can still contact Apple Support and explain the issue; out-of-warranty service is available, but it is not free.
AirPods Pro 3 Static Issues: No Fix Yet as of April 2026
Since launch, AirPods Pro 3 owners have reported a persistent static or hissing noise when ANC is active with no audio playing. Users have also reported high-pitched whistling and video latency. Apple released two firmware updates (8B25 in November 2025 and 8B30 in December 2025) that did not resolve the issue. Some owners have had their units replaced by Apple, but replacement units exhibit the same problem — which suggests this may be a firmware or hardware design issue rather than a per-unit defect. Apple has not acknowledged the problem officially or launched a service program as of April 2026. Set up a RecallRadar alert at recallradar.co/alerts to get notified immediately if Apple launches a service program for the AirPods Pro 3.
What to Try Before Contacting Apple
These will not fix a hardware defect but they rule out software causes. Clean the mesh speaker grilles with a dry soft-bristle brush — blocked mesh creates pressure that sounds like crackling. Check that your AirPods firmware is current: with AirPods connected, go to Settings, then Bluetooth, tap the i next to your AirPods, and scroll to Version. Updates install automatically when AirPods are in the case and charging near a connected iPhone. Try toggling Noise Control off and on: swipe down on iPhone, long-press the volume slider, and switch between Off, ANC, and Transparency. If static only appears in ANC mode, that confirms the issue is the ANC system, not the speaker itself. Reset and re-pair: put AirPods in the case, hold the setup button on the back until the light flashes amber then white, then reconnect. If the problem persists after a reset, it is hardware.
How to Contact Apple About a Sound Issue
Go to getsupport.apple.com and select AirPods. Describe the specific symptom: crackling in loud environments, static with ANC on, or loss of bass. Apple will ask for your AirPods serial number — find it in Settings, Bluetooth, tap the i next to your AirPods. Bring proof of purchase if you are asking about a recently ended program or requesting a goodwill exception. Apple Retail Store and Apple Authorized Service Providers can both examine AirPods — walk-in is often faster than mail-in for a quick eligibility check. Out-of-warranty replacement for a single AirPod runs roughly 9 USD per bud as of 2026.
