The AirPods Pro Sound Issues Service Program
In October 2020, Apple launched a service program for first-generation AirPods Pro experiencing sound quality issues. This isn't technically a "recall," but the remedy is the same: free replacement of defective earbuds. What's covered: Crackling or static sounds that increase in loud environments, during exercise, or while talking on the phone. Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) not working as expected — sounds leak through when ANC is enabled. Loss of bass sound. Background static noise in Transparency mode. Models affected: AirPods Pro (1st generation) manufactured before October 2020. This includes most AirPods Pro sold between October 2019 and September 2020. What Apple offers: Free replacement of the affected AirPod earbud(s) — left, right, or both. If your charging case has audio-related issues tied to the earbuds, Apple may replace it too. No cost, no questions asked if your serial number qualifies.
Is YOUR AirPods Pro Eligible?
Eligibility is based on your serial number and manufacture date. How to find your serial number: Method 1: iPhone Settings (easiest). Open Settings on your iPhone, tap Bluetooth, find your AirPods Pro in the list and tap the "i" icon next to them, scroll down — Serial Number appears below the model info, tap and hold the serial number to copy it. Method 2: On the charging case. Open the lid of your AirPods Pro charging case, look inside the lid near the hinge (you'll need a flashlight), the serial number is printed in tiny text. Method 3: On the original box. If you still have the box, the serial number is printed on the barcode label on the back. Once you have your serial number: Visit checkcoverage.apple.com, enter your serial number, if eligible, it will say "This product is covered by the AirPods Pro Service Program".
What's Covered (And What's Not)
Apple's service program has specific boundaries. Covered issues: Crackling or static noise during calls or music playback, increased distortion in loud environments (concerts, gyms, traffic), Active Noise Cancellation not blocking external sound effectively, Transparency mode producing background static or hiss, loss of bass response (music sounds "tinny" or flat). NOT covered: Physical damage (cracked case, broken stem, crushed earbuds), water damage beyond the IPX4 rating (don't submerge them — they're sweat/splash resistant, not waterproof), lost or stolen AirPods (this is a defect program, not a replacement service for missing items), battery degradation (battery life declining over time is normal and not covered), AirPods Pro 2nd generation (different model, not part of this program).
How to Get Your Free Replacement
If your serial number qualifies, here's how to claim your replacement. Option 1: Apple Store (Genius Bar). Book an appointment at apple.com/retail or via the Apple Store app. Bring both AirPods and the charging case. Bring your iPhone if you can (helps them verify pairing and serial number). The technician will test your AirPods and confirm the issue. Replacement time: Same-day in most cases (they keep stock on hand). Option 2: Mail-in Service via Apple Support. Visit support.apple.com or call 1-800-275-2273. Select "AirPods" → "Repairs & Physical Damage" → "Audio and sound quality". Confirm your serial number and describe the issue. Apple sends you a prepaid shipping box. Mail your AirPods in, and they send back replacements within 5-7 business days. Option 3: Apple Authorized Service Provider. Some Best Buy locations and independent repair shops offer AirPods service. Call ahead to confirm they participate in the program.
The 3-Year Window — Check Before It Closes
Apple's service programs typically cover devices for 3 years from the original retail purchase date. This is separate from your standard 1-year warranty or AppleCare+ coverage. How the window works: You bought AirPods Pro in November 2019. The service program was announced in October 2020. Even if your 1-year warranty expired in November 2020, the service program covers you until November 2022 — three years from purchase. Why this matters: AirPods Pro 1st gen were sold from October 2019 through September 2022 (when 2nd gen launched). If you bought yours in 2019 or early 2020, your 3-year window may be closing soon or may have already closed. Urgency check (2025): 2019 purchase → Window closed in 2022 (you likely missed it). 2020 purchase → Window closes in 2023 (check NOW if you haven't). 2021-2022 purchase → You still have time.
AirPods Pro 2nd Gen and AirPods 4 — Any Programs?
As of March 2025, there are no active service programs for AirPods Pro 2nd generation or the new AirPods 4. Known issues reported (but no program yet): AirPods Pro 2nd gen: Some users report a high-pitched ringing sound when ANC is enabled in quiet environments. Occasional Bluetooth connectivity drops after firmware updates. Apple has acknowledged these issues on support forums but hasn't launched a formal program. AirPods 4: Too new to have widespread defect reports (launched late 2024). Just because there's no program today doesn't mean one won't launch later. Apple's pattern is to wait 12-18 months after a model launches to see if issues affect a large enough percentage of users. The AirPods Pro 1st gen program wasn't announced until a full year after launch.
When the Apple Store Says You're Not Eligible
Sometimes the store gets it wrong. Level 1: Ask for a senior advisor at the store. If the Genius Bar employee says you're not eligible, politely ask: "Can I speak with a manager or senior technician? I believe this qualifies under the AirPods Pro Service Program for Sound Issues." Pull up the official program page on your phone and show them your serial number and the manufacture date. Level 2: Call Apple Support. If the store can't help, call 1-800-275-2273. Say "AirPods Pro service program". Provide your serial number, describe the symptoms, and ask them to open a case and escalate if needed. Phone support sometimes has more flexibility than retail. Level 3: Executive Relations. For persistent denials, email tcook@apple.com. It's monitored by Apple's executive relations team. They typically respond within 24-48 hours and often override store decisions for valid claims.
What to Do If You Already Paid for a Repair
If you paid Apple or a third-party shop to fix your AirPods Pro before learning about this program, you might be able to get a refund. Apple's refund policy for retroactive program claims: If you paid for a repair within the past 2 years and your AirPods qualify for the service program, Apple will refund you the cost. How to claim a refund: (1) Gather your documentation: repair receipt from Apple or authorized provider, serial number of the repaired AirPods, proof that the issue was program-related (receipt should mention "audio" or "sound quality"). (2) Contact Apple Support at 1-800-275-2273. (3) Say "I paid for a repair that's now covered by the AirPods Pro Service Program". (4) They'll open a case and review your claim. (5) If approved, refund is processed to your original payment method within 7-10 business days.
